For people with mobility issues in Kolkata, India, leaving home is not simple. Even traveling short distances can require help from others, or be too difficult to manage at all. In India, an estimated 2% of the population requires mobility assistance.<\/p>

Lions in District 322B1 saw this challenge firsthand through their service work. \u201cWe frequently encountered individuals who relied entirely on family members or makeshift support to move. In many cases, this dependency confined them indoors, limiting their access to education, livelihood and social interaction,\u201d said Lion Akshit Bagla.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

With support from a District and Club Community Impact Grant (DCG) from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the district partnered with Mobility Worldwide to bring mobility carts to those who needed them most. In early 2025, 225 individuals received hand-powered mobility carts after completing an application and screening process designed to reach those with the greatest need.<\/p>

Lions realized mobility is not just a physical challenge, it is a barrier to dignity and independence. \u201cProviding mobility is about restoring dignity. When a person can move independently, they regain confidence, self-worth and control over their life,\u201d said Lion Bagla.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Progress from this initiative was immediate. Individuals who rarely left their homes are now able to engage with their communities, attend school or explore new ways to earn an income. Their families have also felt the change.<\/p>

\u201cThe feedback has been deeply emotional. Families have shared how the carts have reduced their caregiving burden while bringing joy and independence to their loved ones,\u201d Lion Bagla said.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The project also came at a critical time. After the COVID-19 pandemic, many vulnerable families faced increased economic and social challenges. Providing mobility not only made daily tasks easier but also opened doors to new opportunities.<\/p>

Lions anticipate that the carts will make a lasting impact, supporting users in their daily lives for years to come. \u201cThis is just the beginning.
