For families grieving the loss of a loved one, practical difficulties can deepen an already painful moment. In Karumathampatti, in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu, a new Mobile Mortuary Van will help ensure that every family, regardless of income, can provide a dignified final journey for a departed loved one. Somanur Lions Club, District 3241D, donated the ₹25 lakh vehicle to the service of the community. It will enable the safe and respectful transportation of mortal remains, particularly supporting economically challenged families who may not have access to such a facility.
The donation was made possible by Club President Revathy, Auditor Murugusamy, Chinnamuthu, S. N. Kaliappan, Kalichamy, other club members and dedicated donors. Their contributions brought the initiative from intention to reality. District Governor R. Dinakaran formally handed over the van to Karumathampatti Municipal Commissioner Bharathy and Municipal President Nithya Manokaran. Placed in the care of the Municipality, the vehicle is intended to serve people from all sections of society and provide dependable assistance when families need it most.
By placing the vehicle within the municipal system, the club hopes the service will remain accessible, efficiently managed and available whenever local families require assistance. For the Lions, the project broadens the meaning of community service. Their work is often associated with education, healthcare, and development, but compassion is no less important at the end of life. Respectful facilities and timely support can relieve families of logistical and financial strain while allowing them to focus on mourning and remembrance.
The van also reflects a collective effort. Club members, district leaders, donors, and well-wishers combined their resources and time to create a service designed for lasting public benefit. Its impact will be measured not simply by its cost, but by the reassurance it offers families facing loss.
