Three clubs unite to secure safe drinking water for 150 residential students in Malda
During a health check-up camp at Jawaharlal Nehru Abasik Mission — a residential school in Malda serving 150 underprivileged students — doctors flagged a problem that went beyond the children’s immediate ailments. The water they drank every day was making them sick.
Malda New Century Lions Club, District 322H, took note. Rather than a one-time intervention, the club chose to adopt the institution, committing to its long-term welfare. The decision set off a chain reaction: Malda Jagriti Lions Club and Malda Nightingales Lions Club joined the effort, turning a single club’s resolve into a three-club mission.
The clubs approached the project systematically. After consultation with technical experts, the clubs installed a comprehensive water filtration, treatment, and potabilization system, ensuring students now have access to safe drinking water. A cold-water dispenser was added for daily use. The clubs also installed a directional signboard at the main road leading into the city, marking the school’s association with Lions and improving its visibility.
District Governor Arun Maheshwari inaugurated the project on June 13, 2025, in the presence of club members, school staff, and local dignitaries.
The clubs did not stop there. All three have pledged continued support to the school — addressing environmental concerns, organizing health camps, meeting nutritional needs, and responding to medical requirements as they arise. The water project opened the door to a broader partnership.
