In August 2025, major flooding tore through Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India leaving thousands of victims in misery. The government stepped in, but could not meet the overwhelming needs of the community. Many victims were left without shelter, food or drinkable water.
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) showed up as a lifeline during this crisis, providing Lions of District 321E with a US$12,000 Emergency Grant to bring relief to over 4,500 flood victims. “After receiving the grant, we reassessed the emergency situation of several flood-affected areas of District 321E and found three locations where residents were severely impacted: Gaughat, Muthi Ganj, Prayagraj; Kailashpuri, Salori, Prayagraj; and Chilh, Mirzapur,” says District Governor Dr. Arpan Dhar Dubey.
Lions organized three major relief camps focused on the pressing needs of the displaced population. Every family received a bag of essential raw food materials, including wheat flour, rice, pulses, jaggery, turmeric, cumin and salt, allowing them to make their own meals again. Volunteers also distributed milk, fruit and bread. Due to the cold conditions and lack of adequate clothing, Lions also offered additional clothing and 600 blankets, prioritizing those who were sick, victims who were elderly and families who lost everything.
As contaminated water was causing widespread illness, access to safe drinking water was a major concern. Lions distributed mineral water during the camps and worked with local authorities to ensure safe water supply for the affected communities. Authorities responded quickly, helping to prevent further outbreaks of disease.
During this time, medical care became extremely important. Lions provided medical supplies and encouraged local doctors to volunteer one to two hours daily in the affected areas and they heeded Lions’ call to action.“We are so grateful to such medical professionals who helped flood victims on behalf of the Lions,” says District Governor Dr. Arpan Dhar Dubey. More than 1,500 patients received medical attention through this initiative, bringing much-needed care to those who otherwise had none.
When natural disasters strike, Lions are quick to offer help. With an LCIF disaster relief grant, they can do even more for communities devastated by hurricanes, floods, fires and other major events.
