MD 320: Growing Membership and Impact Through Sustained Service

GAT Report

Strengthening leadership, supporting membership growth, and ensuring that service remains visible in the community are central to the Global Action Team (GAT) approach. MD 320’s Free Meals on Wheels program demonstrates exactly what this looks like in practice.

Now into its fourth consecutive year, this initiative remains one of the multiple’s most consistent and structured responses to hunger. In District 320E, the program has been providing nutritious rice-based meals to nearly 400 attendants of patients at the Government General Hospital in Nalgonda, Telangana.

The scale is significant, but the defining feature of this initiative is continuity: service delivered every day, with dignity, discipline, and care. This consistency has enabled the project to move beyond a campaign-based approach and function as a sustained hunger-relief mission, aligned with Lions International’s Global Cause: Hunger.

Leadership Driving Impact
The guidance of Lion leaders has played a central role in maintaining this momentum during Lions Year 2025–2026. Under District Governor Madan Mohan Repala, District 320E organised Service Week – Hunger, renewing focus on hunger alleviation while strengthening coordination across clubs. Support from the Vice District Governors and operational backing from the Nalgonda Lions Free Meals Foundation ensured effective execution on the ground.

Second Vice District Governor Satheesh Kumar Kode continues as the service coordinator, overseeing daily logistics, volunteer rotation, and quality monitoring. This hands-on approach maintains consistency without operational fatigue.

Strategic guidance from Past GAT Area Leader MD 316 & 320 Bheemaiah Jagini keeps the project aligned with broader GAT objectives, linking service outcomes with leadership development and membership growth.

Collective Ownership Builds Community Trust
Members from 18 Lions Clubs in Nalgonda town participate on a rotational basis, reinforcing collaboration across clubs. Over time, community participation has grown, with non-Lions and families contributing regularly.

Five operational vehicles serve nearly 1,000 people daily. To date, approximately 11 lakh individuals have benefitted from this initiative.

District-wide Reach
The Free Meals on Wheels services have extended to several towns across Telangana.  Approximately 200 attendants at the Miryalaguda Government Hospital are fed daily, 100 needy persons are served in Sathupalli every day, with similar services in Aswapuram, Suryapet, Nakrekal, and Vanasthalipuram.

Strengthening Lionism Through Service
The outcomes extend beyond hunger relief. Nalgonda has seen growth from 11 to 18 Lions Clubs and an increase in membership from 800 to 1,200 Lions. Visible, meaningful service attracts committed leaders and fuels organisational growth.

Nalgonda Lions Free Meals Foundation
Expanding into related initiatives, the Foundation provides nutritional support to tuberculosis patients, food distribution at summer coaching camps, competitive exam centres and sports venues, ragi malt distribution at bus stands during peak summer, and responsive hunger-relief at community events. Food relief worth ₹68 lakhs has been distributed, with contributions continuing in the current fiscal year.

Looking ahead, plans are underway for a mobile vision screening unit, to provide preventive eye care in rural areas.

A Legacy of Vision
Conceived by PCC Mohan Rao Teegala, the Free Meals on Wheels program stands as a flagship example of how focused leadership, shared responsibility, and sustained service can strengthen communities—and Lionism itself—under the GAT framework.
